How to Add a Grid to a Photo

Add a proportional drawing grid to any reference photo in seconds — free, browser-based, no software required.

Why Add a Grid to a Photo?

Adding a grid to your reference photo is the first step in the grid drawing method. The grid divides your image into manageable sections so you can reproduce each area accurately on your canvas.

How to Do It Online (Free)

You don't need Photoshop or GIMP. Our Photo Grid Maker runs entirely in your browser.

  • Go to the Photo Grid Maker tool
  • Upload your JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP reference
  • Set rows and columns (8×8 is a good default)
  • Adjust line color, width, and opacity
  • Enable cell labels (A1, B2…) for easier navigation
  • Download PNG or JPG and use while drawing

Tips for Best Results

Use a high-resolution reference for detailed work. Set opacity around 35–50% if printing the grid overlay directly. For digital drawing on a tablet, a darker grid at 60–80% opacity may work better.

Share your grid settings via URL so you can return to the exact same configuration later.
